Moving to France:
the paperwork, the healthcare, the life.

The visitor visa benchmark is about €1,478/month in income. Citizenship still takes 5 years. And under the US tax treaty, your 401(k), IRA and Social Security are taxed in the US — not France. Here's everything else, from official sources, checked and dated.

2026 rule changes

Three things that changed recently — and matter

The language bar went up on 1 January 2026. France's 2024 immigration law took full effect: a multi-year residence card now needs A2 French, the 10-year resident card needs B1 (was A2), and citizenship needs B2 (was B1) — plus a new 40-question civic exam (80% to pass) for resident cards and naturalisation. The 5-year residency clock for citizenship did not change.
The arrival tax rose to €300. Since 1 May 2026, validating a long-stay visitor visa (VLS-TS) online — mandatory within 3 months of arrival — costs €300, up from €200. Budget for it; your visa isn't a residence permit until it's validated.
Europe's borders now count your days. The EES biometric entry-exit system has been recording Schengen entries since October 2025, and ETIAS travel authorisation (€20) has been delayed to 2027. Scouting trips still get 90 days per rolling 180 — but overstays are now automatically visible.
