Moving to Norway:
wealth tax, oil wealth, and the visa truth.

Start with the hard truth: Norway has no retirement visa. None. If you can't work, sponsor through family, or claim EEA rights, you can't move here — and we'll say so before anyone sells you a consultation. Here's what actually works, with 2026 numbers.

Three things that make Norway different — and matter

There is no retirement visa, and savings don't help. UDI, the immigration directorate, has no permit for living off pensions or investments. Money alone gets a non-EEA national nothing. The workable routes are a skilled-worker job, family immigration, or study — we map them all here.
Norway taxes wealth, not just income. In 2026, net assets above NOK 1.9 million (≈ $186,000 — couples get NOK 3.8M) are taxed at 1% a year, 1.1% above NOK 21.5 million. A typical American retirement portfolio clears the threshold easily. The wealth-tax guide runs the numbers.
Norway is not in the EU. It's in the EEA and Schengen, so EU-citizen free movement applies to Europeans — not to you. Your 90/180 visa-free days work like anywhere else in Schengen, and residency runs entirely through UDI's national rules.
