Moving to Sweden:
no retirement visa, but worth the effort.

Sweden has no retirement visa — and we'll say that plainly rather than sell you a workaround. A work permit needs SEK 34,470 a month. The Stockholm rental queue averages 9 years. Healthcare tops out at SEK 1,450 a year. Here's the whole honest picture, from official sources, checked and dated.

2026 rule changes

Three things that changed recently — and matter

Citizenship now takes 8 years. From 6 June 2026 the habitual-residence requirement rose from 5 to 8 years — with no transitional arrangements, so it applies to applications already in the queue. A test on Swedish society arrives in August 2026; a Swedish language test follows by 1 October 2027. Self-sufficiency is now also required.
The work-permit salary floor jumped twice in June 2026. From 1 June, the requirement became 90% of the Swedish median salary (up from 80%). On 16 June, SCB's new median (SEK 38,300) pushed the floor to SEK 34,470/month. Exempt shortage occupations need 75% (SEK 28,725).
The SINK tax for non-residents fell. If you draw a Swedish-source pension or salary while living outside Sweden, the flat SINK rate dropped from 25% to 22.5% on 1 January 2026 — and falls again to 20% on 1 January 2027.
